Paintings inspired by the concept of Vestiges and submitted for inclusion in an exhibition of the same name between 2nd July to 31st July 2026 at The Auger Collective, Sovereign Centre, Boscombe.
I have long been thinking about what lies beneath the landscape; in the way it has been formed and how it has been occupied and used. This subject has featured in earlier artwork and has also been the source of song writing and recording.
The theme chimed with the concept of the Vestiges Programme and these artworks seek to express a sense of what may lie beneath the surface and become exposed over time.
These are landscapes but not in the traditional view of land with a horizon or features on the surface. They are presented in a square format to suggest both an excavation area and the square of mapping coordinates. Consistent with what makes up our land the artwork is created from mixed media including oil, acrylic, pastel and pencil and, of course, pigment was traditionally taken from the land or found growing or living off the land. Colour, is itself a vestige of its source.
